Waffle Walle – Authentic Belgium Delights

I was asked by my good friend, to try out his friend’s Waffle store.
So, I boarded my Jet(VW VENTO) and off I went to Waffle Walle, in The Royal Meenakshi Mall, Bannergatta Road, Bangalore. This place is quite a drive from my place and I had no company, thanks to a friend ditching me 😦 But some upbeat music on the go and I was there in no time!!

Waffle Walle dishes out waffles out of a trailer, that looks very nice. It is on the same side of the mall, as the entry of the car park.

I went there to find a couple of other foodies waiting for me, to gorge on the delicacies!! I couldn’t thank them enough, for waiting for me as I wouldn’t have been able to have all of these by myself! Waffles are a leavened batter or dough cooked between two plates. They are usually had in European countries, particularly Belgium and date way back to the 15th century. There has been a steady adoption of Waffles in the USA. India was pretty late to the party, but it does look like Indians are ready to get familiarized with the waffles πŸ™‚

I met the owner of this store, Chetan Kedia and he talked a bit about his journey from being a banker to following his dream of opening a waffle store. He walked us through the various types of the waffles available.

They’ve basically got 2 types of waffles : Liege Waffles and Brussels Waffles.

Liege Waffles

This is the most common type of waffles and are crisp, thick, chewier and generally sweeter in nature. I found this type of waffle very rich in taste and heavy πŸ™‚

Chetan was kind enough to keep asking us our choices on the toppings. We picked blueberry topping, as it’s my favorite πŸ™‚

Liege waffles with Blueberries + Whipped Cream

The waffle was very crisp at the edges. This can be attributed to the pearl sugar that is mixed in the batter, which caramelizes when heated. Pearl sugar is not quite easily available in India and Waffle walle imports this on a regular basis. I took a look at the pearl sugar, it looked like lumps of unevenly shaped white sugar.

The blueberries were fresh and the whipped cream was light!

It was a great start to the waffle tasting session πŸ™‚

Next up, we had another Liege Waffle, with their signature toppings ; Strawberries and chocolate sauce. This is apparently the second most famous waffle at their store. Go there to find out which is their best one πŸ˜‰

Liege Waffles with Strawberries and hot Chocolate sauce + Scoop of Vanilla Icecream

The combination of crisp Liege waffles with the freshest of fresh strawberries, and their in-house hot chocolate sauce was heavenly πŸ™‚ They make the chocolate sauce and it was very good; not too sweet, not too thick, just right!

We then moved onto the next type of the waffles ; Brussels Waffles .

Brussels Waffles

The Brussels Waffles are lighter, softer and easier to get through πŸ™‚ They’re made with egg-white-leavened batter.
If you want to know to know which waffle you’re having( Liege or Brussels), just by looking at it, it’s quite easy to know! Brussels waffles have rectangular sides, while Liege doesn’t!!

The first Brussels waffles we tried was the one with maple syrup and chocolate sauce!

Brussels Waffles with Maple Syrup, hot chocolate sauce + Whipped Cream

This waffle was so amazing that I actually preferred them over the Liege Waffles. The reason being, it was lighter and softer than the Liege waffle.
The softness could also be due to the maple syrup! The hot chocolate sauce and the maple syrup combination is a must try. Skip the whipped cream, if you can πŸ™‚

SURPRISE WAFFLE

We were told that we have a surprise in store for us and that we were the first customers to be handed this type of waffle, to gather feedback. Now, we all know that waffles are desserts, but did you think that we could have a savory waffle ?? No, right? πŸ™‚
The creative genius that Chetan is, he created a savory waffle!!

HORIATIKI WAFFLE( The name is not yet decided by Waffle Walle, I’ll name it Horiatiki because of it’s resemblance to the greek salad )

This waffle was the last one that we tried and the best was saved for last! This was my favorite waffle out of the 4 we tried πŸ™‚
The waffle looked freaking fresh and colorful!! The waffle has feta cheese and I love feta cheese !! I first had feta cheese at the Greek restaurant, Thalassa, in Vagator, Goa.
Both me and my foodie friend got reminded of this epic place in Goa, when we saw this waffle.
Apart from feta cheese, which was the hero of the waffle, the other toppings included lettuce, bell peppers, tomatoes, lemon-vinegar oil/juice. This was also a brussels waffle btw! I loved this one.

Hot chocolate drink with chocolate lollipop

Surprises didn’t end with the savory waffle!! We then got a chance to try the hot chocolate drink.
The hot chocolate drink had a chocolate lollipop which had to be dipped in the drink. The drink in itself had a secret ingredient that made the drink spicy πŸ™‚
I wont reveal what that was, go find that out, yourself πŸ™‚

Areas of Improvement by Butter Theory

1. Each of the waffle trays were beautifully designed & crafted.
The branding was however at the back of the tray, which is not the best thing to do. It should be visible while you’re having the waffle. Just try to bring the branding onto the front.

2. The location of the outlet is actually not the best. They should try to get something opened up in the 2 most prime locations in Bangalore( Koramangala & Indiranagar ). All the moolah and the young crowd is in this part of the city, not in Bannerghatta road πŸ™‚
3. The spoons given should be sharp enough to cut the waffles, as we were given blunt plastic forks/spoons as choices. We found it quite hard to cut through the waffles.
4. The trailer should have some seating next to it. It could get tiresome to stand in the sun( especially in the summer ). They could have some garden umbrellas and couple of chairs to attract the lazy crowd of Bangalore πŸ™‚
5. They should continue to have the ‘make your own waffle’. We Indians love the idea of customizations and would love to try on whatever we feel like having as part of the waffle we choose. This however may end up getting a bad review, if for instance someone chooses wrong combinations and not liking it πŸ™‚
Let the customer know what combinations work well and this could help in getting the perfect combination created!!

I think my visit to Waffle Walle was well worth the long drive. Oh and I didn’t have to go looking for lunch, as these delectable waffles kept my hunger away for a few hours πŸ™‚
